Umthati

Scifest offered me the opportunity to explore more with my presenting skills.  Interesting piece to camera options were explored and made me more comfortable with stepping out of convention to make for light - hearted 'tail-ender' type news pieces.

The Toys from Trash scifest workshop allowed me to engage with children and journalsim.  In the industry my subjects won't always be 'offical' sources, it has taught me the importance of treating younger subjects with the same respect.

Toys from trash

The Umthathi Training Project in Grahamstown teaches the importance of organic produce and helps communities to grow their own. The Seventh Day Adventist School in Joza takes up the challenge and manages their own vegetable garden in a small space with minimal resources. Koleka Ralo explains the benefits of their techniques. These techniques have been adopted by Seventh Day Adventist School in Joza.

Toys from Trash, a Scifest 2012 workshop, sees Ashok Rupner teaching the magic of making music from trash and other tricks. Whitney Turner, an MA student, also uses trash in her contemporary performance to create awareness about water conservation and the environment. Tracy Jeffery uses trash to make money from useful products like purses and earnings.
