Serious sangoma related crimes are on the rise but very little attention is given to cases where people have been exploited by some sangomas as far as money is involved. Shedding Light takes a look at a case study – Iris Morris visited a sangoma who she came across in a Daily Sun advert. The sangoma ordered her to place all her life earnings in two safes which amounted to approximately R1.3 million. When the safes were later opened after the key went missing, all the money had mysteriously turned into plain white paper. She opened a case of fraud against the sangoma in question. The police still find it difficult to work with such cases as there are racial and cultural discrepancies regarding traditional healing. While the police are still skeptical, other organisations such as area specific associations do exist to help curb exploitation in the traditional healing field. Based on Iris’ case, one can see that Ignorance looms as far as traditional healing practices are concerned. People who wish to explore such alternatives should get the necessary information and education that is in place for their protection.
